OnePlus 3 to Arrive This Summer

The next-gen OnePlus smartphone is slated to arrive in the second quarter.

First reported by CNET en Español, a OnePlus spokesman later confirmed the news to PCMag.

Further details are scant: The China-based vendor's fourth model features a "new design," OnePlus founder Carl Pei told CNET, but he declined to offer specifics.

In December, OnePlus dropped its invitation-only system for the OnePlus 2 (pictured), allowing anyone to purchase the 5.5-inch smartphone. Released in August, the OnePlus 2 is powered by the OxygenOS (based on Android 5.1) and features a 1080p HD display, with customizable navigation keys that dim and disappear when not in use. It also comes with a fingerprint sensor to quickly and securely unlock the phone.

OnePlus also recently announced a price cut for the so-called "2016 flagship killer," offering the OnePlus 2 for $349—$40 less than its going rate.

Rate changes often signal a transition: Usually the company is looking to clear out its current inventory to make room for something new. In this case, that's the OnePlus 3, expected just months after the invite-free OnePlus X launched in January.

"The U.S. will be very important for us this year," Pei told CNET, adding that the company will begin to use more "traditional marketing" strategies to promote its devices.

The upcoming handset will also reportedly arrive unlocked, sold directly by OnePlus.
